Round Trip Footplate Passes

Do you have a relation or friend that has a steam background, perhaps a retired B.R. Driver or someone who worked with industrial steam during their working lives-or someone who is just interested in the experience?, we can help you revive memories of days gone by.

If you plan to visit Chatham's Historic Dockyard when the Steam Railway is operating, and contact us in advance, we can arrange a footplate pass, which would allow the recipient to participate in a round trip of the railway on the footplate. We do not charge for footplate passes, but at the end of trip, you may wish to make a voluntary contribution to our locomotive restoration fund. Note however, that it is necessary to pay the normal enterance fee to the Historic Dockyard for access to the site and the steam locomotives.

If you would like to arrange a footplate visit for someone, please write to:
51 Wood Street,
With details of the recipient and the date you intend to visit the Historic Dockyard. Please enclose a stamped addressed envelope.

Special Steaming Days

Special steaming days can be arranged for larger parties, for example:

  • Photographers
  • Retired Driver`s Footplate Reunions
  • Steam Preservation Societys
  • Model Railway Clubs
  • Birthday parties, Weddings & other celebrations

Special steaming days are subject to authorisation and will be charged at a set rate by the Historic Dockyard Trust.
If you are considering a special steaming, and would like further information, please write to the address shown above with details of your requirements.
Please enclose a stamped addressed envelope.
Thank you.
