Hugh Talbot Burgoyne VC was appointed Captain of H.M.S. CAPTAIN in 1869. The ship was an unsuccessful warship, designed and built by Cammell Laird in Birkenhead.
H.M.S. Captain was a masted turret ship which was completed in April 1870 and capsized in September 1870, with the loss of 500 lives because of design and construction errors that led to inadequate stability.
