01Our story

The railway that
built the ships.

For generations, the railway was the quiet force behind the dockyard’s mighty work.

It carried materials, machinery and people through one of Britain’s most important naval dockyards. Today, its story lives on in a remarkable collection of locomotives, experiments and engineering.

Ideas that
travelled far.

The dockyard was more than a place of work. It was a proving ground.

In 1878, experimental 18-inch gauge Handyside locomotives were put through their paces. At Chatham, the trials showed they could reach 12 miles per hour on level track and negotiate remarkably tight curves.

The engines were ultimately rejected for military field use, but some went on to support construction of Chatham’s fortifications. Their story captures a spirit of practical invention that ran through the dockyard.
